Just over a year ago, Bob Greenway, a Petoskey musician with the band JUSDUIT, was performing with his band mate, Jeff Pagel, when he realized that their combined musical talents could offer more to the community than just entertainment.
"I turned to Jeff one night and looked at him and asked him, 'Hey, are you having fun?'" Greenway said.
"I just had this idea that while we enjoy playing so much, we could be doing it for someone in need."
It was just after Christmas, and Greenway knew that it was a time of year when fewer people donated to charities, even though the need was still great.
"People just don't give as much as they do during the holidays, and I wanted to help Brother Dan's Food Pantry stock those shelves again," Greenway explained. "So I had this idea that we could get together with other local musicians, we would donate our time and raise money to help."
Greenway's idea paid off, and last year's first ever "Have a Heart" benefit raised more than $10,000 for Brother Dan's Food Pantry.
This year, the event will take place from noon-11 p.m. on Sunday, Feb. 13, at the Emmet County Fairgrounds Community Building.
"When we were first planning this a year ago, we had no idea that it would get as big as it did, but our community has been marvelous, spectacular, about donating," Greenway explained. "People are just struggling and could really use the help."
Because of the success of last year's event, this year's "Have a Heart" event will be two hours longer and 10 local musicians and bands are scheduled to perform.
A 50-50 raffle and silent auction will also take place.
The cost is $10 per person or $25 per family at the door, which includes hors d'oeuvres and all entertainment. A cash bar will also be available.
"It's just a great day to get out with a loved one, have a good time and enjoy some great local musicians while at the same time, helping our community," Greenway said. "It's become a big event and we're looking forward to it growing."
