Ravens bar of the week: Turp's
A haven for Ravens fans in sports bar-starved Mount Vernon
Turp's is the Ravens bar of the week. (Baltimore Sun, Baltimore Sun / October 27, 2009)
Yes, Terps games are broadcast, but the bar caters to sports fans of all stripes. On Ravens game days, it offers several drink specials.
The bar opened two years ago, replacing bistro Neo Viccino, and has become popular with students and neighbors who were tired of going to the other quasi-sports bars around, namely Mick O'Shea's and the Midtown Yacht Club.
The bar has also stayed busy with attractive weekday specials — 30-cent wings on Mondays, and half-price pizzas and burgers on Tuesdays and Wednesday, respectively. Service is consistently attentive.
Drinks: Turp's has a modest but worthwhile selection of craft beers on tap: Flying Dog and Magic Hat No. 9, among others. There are also several domestics, including National Bohemian. The selection by the bottle is much larger. On game days, domestic bottles are $2.25, and a bucket of domestic bottles is $9.95, said manager Juliannah Harrison. There are also $2 shooters.
Food: Turp's is ideal for everyday food. The menu includes pizza, burgers, pasta and salads. And prices are fairly affordable — the costliest item on the menu is filet mignon, at $18. The bar does not have any food specials for game days.
Decor: Turp's is just as handsome as the other sister establishments in the Jay's Restaurant Group, like the nearby XS. It's painted in warm tones and the lighting is in keeping with a coffee shop. There are also several TV screens for the games.
Distance from stadium: The bar is about nine minutes from M&T Bank Stadium by car, with nearby stops for the Charm City Circulator and buses.
Parking: Metered parking is available.
