Update, June 27 — 4:47 p.m.: One Direction members Zayn Malik and Louis Tomlinson were "ideal clients," according to Tattooed Heart Studios owner John Garancheski. He tattooed Zayn, while another artist who declined to comment worked on Louis' piece.
Garancheski says the shop received a call earlier in the day from a member of One Direction's entourage, asking if they could accommodate "high profile" clients. At around 6 p.m. on Tuesday, group members Zayn, Louis and Liam Payne entered the store. They found Tattooed Heart Studios from a Google search of local shops.
The group members came with ideas of what they wanted but were open to the artists' ideas, Garancheski said.
"They brought good ideas to the table and let us do our thing," Garancheski said. "It was a mutual, casual creative experience. They seemed like artists in the sense they respected the creative process."
Contrary to reports, Zayn's tattoo is not of his girlfriend, Perrie Edwards, but was partially inspired by her, Garancheski said. Zayn even drew the initial sketch of "a girl with a beanie hat" that later became his tattoo, after Garancheski added his own touch.
"It wasn't a portrait of his girlfriend," he said. "He really likes comic book-style art. He wanted to go with something that was high-contrast, real bold comic book style that resembled characteristics of Perrie, his girlfriend, but not necessarily a portrait of her."
Louis did get the doodles of a spiderweb and a bomb, Garancheski said. He also got a "rope that goes around his wrist that forms a nautical style knot."
And yes, they got hungry. As the artists were working on their sketches, Zayn, Louis and Liam were "camped out on the couch" and eventually sent someone over next door to KFC. Not long after, they were eating buckets of chicken and sandwiches from the fast-food joint.
"They were like, 'Man, the food in America is so much sweeter than we're used to. Even the bread is sweeter,'" Garancheski said in a decent British accent.
The band was not full of themselves at all, according to the owner. They only said they were in One Direction after being asked by Garancheski, and even then "they didn't want to make a big deal of it."
"They were here to get tattooed and have fun," he said.
Update, June 27: The One Direction sightings in Maryland continue ... TMZ is reporting that on Tuesday, members of the band got tattoos at Tattooed Heart Studios in Glen Burnie (7 Vernon Ave.). We know you're dying to know what new ink the guys got. According to the TMZ story, Zayn wanted a tattoo of his girlfriend's face, and Louis requested a spiderweb and a bomb; As for Liam, he skipped the tattoo session and took a walk instead (where does one go for a leisurely stroll in Glen Burnie?). No word on Harry and Niall.
On Tuesday, Tattooed Heart Studios posted a photo on their Facebook page, along with the comment: "Guess who stopped by to get tattooed before they head out to Philadelphia today...," followed by: "#onedirection #tattooedheartstudios #baltimore #maryland #zaynmalik #louistomlinson #liampayne."
Maryland fans of One Direction, the boy band du jour, were astir on Twitter on Monday afternoon over some tweets that seemingly indicated the band was at a Maryland hotel, including a photo purporting to show Niall Horan poolside.
The Tweets come from 1D Alerts Updates, which appears to be a fan/marketing team following the British bandmates around, documenting their every word and move.
We here at The Baltimore Sun can't vouch for the truthiness of the Twitter account or verify that the photo in question shows the back of one Niall Horan, and we can't even say for sure that the photo was taken today.
However, with our vast Baltimore knowledge, we surmise that said photo was taken by the infinity pool at the Four Seasons in Harbor East. It even shows a lovely view of Federal Hill, the Ritz-Carlton condominiums and the spire of what might be Holy Cross Church in the background.
Audrey Slade, a spokeswoman for the Four Seasons, said Monday evening that she could not comment, per hotel policy.
UPDATE: A Baltimore Sun reporter at the Four Seasons on Tuesday spoke with five tween girls who had congregated there to see the band. The young women said the bandmates had taken off in a van. One Direction has a gig Tuesday evening in Philadelphia, which is just up Interstate 95 from Baltimore.
