Grading the tribute videos to the Ravens

MusicBaltimore Police DepartmentRay LewisEd Reed

The Ravens' playoff run to New Orleans has inspired some fans in the area to upload videos displaying pride, humor, talent and wackiness — all in support of their favorite team.

We've been compiling the best and most popular videos in this gallery. While everyone who posted a video deserves some credit for such a brazen example of fandom, some are, of course, better than others.

So just for fun, let's grade a handful of the clips.

"Ravens Nation Army" by the Fayettes

I'm typically not a fan of rewording popular lyrics to fit a different "theme," but this Baltimore quartet does a nice job of staying on topic (why the Ravens rule) and not filling it with anything too cringe-inducing. Also, the band plays the stadium-anthem pretty well in a single-take.

GRADE: B+

"Bring on Brady" ("Call Me Maybe" parody)

Diss songs should exude confidence, and this take on Carly Rae Jepsen's mega-hit of the summer works because it cleverly dismisses football talking heads, the opponent the team had just defeated (Denver) and the Patriots, the next team that was "in our way." Had to deduct a couple of (imaginary) points because the singer was visibly reading the lyrics. Still, it's' a nice choice of song to parody because almost everyone knows the original.

GRADE: B

"Ravens Nation 2013" by Matthew Edward, Fresh Competition and Kenny Silkworth

This gives me nu-metal vibes, which puts the adrenaline-charged tribute at a severe disadvantage from the jump. The Ray Lewis intro could inspire even the meekest to strap on a helmet, so points there. I also laughed out loud when the first guy rapped, "Ed Reed's on a warpath / Who cares about fines?" But still ...

GRADE: C

"Baltimore Police Department: Go Ravens!"

Not really a song but worth a watch because seeing a serious, high-profile department rally around a football team is fun. A lot of squirrel dancing, too.

GRADE: B
