Nacho Mama's -- the Canton restaurant/bar in O'Donnell Square known for its hubcap margaritas and Mexican food -- celebrates its 20th birthday today.
To commemorate, Nacho Mama's is taking $2 off all nachos today. House hubcap margaritas, normally $20, are $15 starting today and lasting through the end of the month. House margaritas will also cost $5 for the rest of January, according to Kallie Amentas, who handles Nacho Mama's marketing. For today only, there will also be a Twinkie, with a candle in it, on each table.
Nacho Mama's has been a long-time favorite of the neighborhood and beyond (like many less-famous Baltimoreans, Michael Phelps is a known fan). It's even more impressive when you consider it opened in 1994, years before Canton became a popular area. In August 2012, owner Patrick "Scunny" McCusker unexpectedly passed away from a bicycle collision in Ocean City, and more than 2,000 people appeared at his funeral at the Cathedral of Mary Our Queen. The stickers of Natty Boh shedding a single tear, created soon after McCusker's death, remain posted around Canton businesses and homes as a tribute to the owner.
The 20th birthday illustration at the top of this post was drawn by Tom Chalkley. Naturally, it features the bar's favorite singer, Elvis Presley, who would have celebrated his 79th birthday today.
