1. Frank Ocean, 'Channel Orange' (Def Jam)
The subtext for this album is a love affair that turned Ocean into an unintended icon for gay and bisexual rights. But Ocean's gift is in the way he makes his personal truth translate on a wider scale. With its yearning vocals, insinuating melodies, understated arrangements and wrenching honesty, "Channel Orange" defines soul.
