Founded In: 2000

Style: jazz (duh)

Influenced by: artists from "all over the jazz spectrum," including John Coltrane and Joe Henderson

Notable: Formed by clarinetist Todd Marcus and saxophonist/flutist Lyle Link, the nine-member band blends traditional jazz with a variety of other musical styles, including hip-hop and world beat.

The group, which plays regularly in the Baltimore-Washington area, features performers who've shared the stage with Herbie Hancock and other great jazz contemporaries.

Quotable: Marcus on the band's sound: "It's modern jazz. We use straight-ahead jazz rhythms and modern jazz harmonies. The music swings hard ... [but audiences] are able to understand [it] without having any prior exposure to jazz or soloing."
