Meet the Band: Arty Hill

Baltimore

Arty Hill, guitar and vocals

2001

country

Jerry Lee Lewis, George Jones, Hank Williams, Carl Perkins

Hill used the lonesome, sauntering singers of the '40s, '50s and '60s as inspiration for his latest album, Bar of Gold. It came out this year and spent two consecutive months on top of the Freeform American Roots chart.

"Part of the reason that Hank [Williams] is so important is that he wrote songs where he was speaking directly to the listener, and we take that for granted now," Hill said. "There's a lot your imagination does when you're listening to those songs. They're meant to play on your personal experiences."
