One morning, I heard a National Public Radio reporter ask a mega-chain video store clerk to recommend a classic movie. She suggested "Pretty Woman." You'll never get that kind of answer from Video Americain's knowledgeable staff. Rather, you'll get recommendations like "Death Race 2000," "Last Temptation of Christ" and "Alphaville" at the Charles Village Video Americain location.
Anything you don't find at Blockbuster (and that can include classics like "Gone with the Wind" and "This is Spinal Tap"), you'll find here. Whether it's "Independence Day" or "The Day of the Jackal" or "Day of the Dead," Video Americain has the widest range of foreign, classic, gay & lesbian, documentary and other hard-to-find movies in the area. With campy movies playing on the monitor and shelves crammed with titles such as "Avenging Disco Godfather," "Reform School Girl" and "Santa Claus Conquers the Martians," Video Americain has more character than all of the mega-chain stores combined. But it's a tough job representing the last bastion of worthy independent stores, so the movie you want might already be checked out. And the new release selection is usually slim pickings after the Friday and Saturday night rental rush, but that gives you a chance to see those classic films you've been meaning to rent. Could there be a better Saturday evening than curling up with your loved ones and watching "Rabid Grannies"? Hardly. --Kari Rosenthal
