Ian McKellen will again take up the robes of Gandalf the Wizard in the cinematic adaptation of J.R.R. Tolkien's fantasy classic The Hobbit, a British film magazine reported yesterday.

But McKellen's publicist said final arrangements were yet to be made.

"Of course he wants to do it, but nothing's been agreed or signed," Clair Dobbs said.

Empire magazine's Web site quoted McKellen, 68, as saying that director Guillermo del Toro told him he would again be playing the white-haired wizard.

McKellen's sonorous interpretation of Gandalf in the Lord of the Rings trilogy delighted fans and critics, earning him an Academy Award nomination for best supporting actor.

The Hobbit is being produced by Peter Jackson, the director of the Rings movies, and is likely to be filmed in his home country of New Zealand next year.

Chapter and verse
A book about the rise and stunning decline of former New York Gov. Eliot Spitzer, co-authored by the makers of a book and documentary about the fall of Enron, is being published by Penguin Group (USA), Penguin imprint Portfolio announced yesterday.

Peter Elkind, who helped write the 2003 best-seller Enron: The Smartest Guys in the Room, is collaborating on the Spitzer book with filmmaker Alex Gibney. They will also work on a documentary about the law-and-order Democrat who resigned in March over allegations about his connection to a $5,500-an-hour call girl ring.

The book and film, currently untitled, are expected to come out about the same time, but no release date has been set.

Gibney's film about Enron, also called Enron: The Smartest Guys in the Room, came out in 2005.

Labor talks
Major Hollywood studios say they are not willing to accept demands for what they call huge pay raises sought by the Screen Actors Guild in contract talks.

In a release posted yesterday on its Web site, the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers says that after 13 days of talks, significant gaps remain between the sides.

The alliance of major studios and networks also noted the Guild's insistence on doubling fees for DVD sales and demands for increases in compensation and benefits.

SAG officials did not return a message seeking comment.
