'The Immigrant'

Joaquin Phoenix and Marion Cotillard in "The Immigrant." (Anne Joyce )

With director and co-writer James Gray in attendance, the period drama “The Immigrant” will open the 49th Chicago International Film Festival Oct. 10 at the Chicago Theatre. It’s the centerpiece of a gala to be dedicated to the late Roger Ebert.

Gray’s earlier works include “Little Odessa” and “Two Lovers.” He premiered “The Immigrant” earlier this year at the Cannes Film Festival, where many feel it was overlooked for an award. Marion Cotillard plays a Polish immigrant who, in 1921 New York, finds herself torn between a manipulative showman/pimp (Joaquin Phoenix) and a dashing stage magician (Jeremy Renner).Gray reportedly has tweaked the film since Cannes.
