Rotunda opens fourth screen Friday

A fourth theater at Rotunda Cinemas will open Friday, owner-operator Ira Miller announced today.

"It's the first part of an expanded entertainment center that will also include a coffee shop," he said.

The new auditorium, which Miller has installed in the space formerly occupied by Tomlinson Craft Collection, is roughly the same size as the 80-seat theater that Miller opened in fall 2010. But this one is 3-D-ready (like the Rotunda's bigger theaters) and boasts a larger screen. Projection at Rotunda Cinemas is now completely digital.

Miller said he expected the coffee shop to open in two weeks and emphasized that these additions are part of ongoing improvements. According to Miller, business at Rotunda Cinemas has not been affected by loss of tenants at the Rotunda mall. "We've found our own niche," he said.

The new screen's debut attraction will be "Tyler Perry's Madea's Witness Protection," which will also play on one other Rotunda screen. Miller said he wanted to open his fourth screen before completing the coffee shop because "I want to get people comfortable with the new theater."

Come 12:01 a.m. Tuesday, two Rotunda theaters, including the new one, will host "The Amazing Spider-Man" in 3-D.
