On the same day that fans will gather to watch the Orioles open their season in Tampa against the Rays, another event will be highlighting baseball in Baltimore.
“The President’s Cup,” a documentary on Baltimore’s annual high school baseball tournament, debuts at 6 p.m. Tuesday at the University of Baltimore’s Wright Theater. The film is directed by University of Baltimore associate professor Julie Simon and chronicles the 2012 edition of the tournament, which is sponsored by City Council President Bernard C. “Jack” Young and draws more than a dozen public and private high schools from around the city.
“I was interested in whether the premise of putting together these kids from very different backgrounds could work, on the baseball field and as a film,” Simon said in a news release.
Initiated under Young’s Productive Lives, Active Youth (P.L.A.Y.) campaign, the tournament by its nature draws together players of with varied backgrounds. And, despite some initial skepticism on the part of Simon, it quickly became clear that the game was capable of working “magic” on the relationships among students who have “very little in common.”
“In the end,” Simon said, “they’re all just kids playing ball.”
The documentary also features Jon Miller, O’s broadcaster from 1982-1996, as narrator.
“I love seeing the President’s Cup games each spring because of the relationships these young athletes form and the learning they experience from playing against new opponents in new settings,” Young said in a news release. “This documentary is a way to share that magic with the public.”
Young, UB Provost Joseph Wood and other officials plan to attend the premiere along with team members, their family and friends. The screening is free and open to the public.
Simon has stated that she hopes to garner interest in the film in the independent film festival circuit.
