Hockey movies, like the sport itself, don't get much respect in the United States. Ask your average citizen to name one, and most old-timers will probably come up with "Slap Shot," the quintessential hockey film starring Paul Newman (above) as player-coach of the minor-league brawlers the Charlestown Chiefs. Those younger than 40 might say "The Mighty Ducks" -- take your pick from a hat trick's worth of them. But there are nearly as many hockey-themed films as there are unexpected turns in the Stanley Cup playoffs.
Let's put on the foil and take a look at some memorable movies set around the ice rink.
