Van Smith

Smith, a MICA graduate with a degree in fine arts, served as costume designer and makeup artist on all of Waters' films from 1972's "Pink Flamingos" to 2004's "A Dirty Shame." He's the man who first shaved Divine's forehead back, to create more room for makeup, and dressed him in the red fishtail gown that would become Divine's signature (it's the one he's wearing on posters for "Pink Flamingos" and in the statue at Baltimore's American Visionary Art Museum). He died of a heart attack on Dec. 5, 2006, at his home in Marianna, Fla.Kenneth K. Lam /
