Maryland Art Place (MAP), according to its mission statement, is "a nonprofit artists' organization established to increase the visibility of regional artists and to stimulate the creativity of the artistic community." That hardly seems to describe it, though. Gallery, performance space, networking opportunity, information resources ... MAP does it all for its artistic community. It hosts a plethora of popular events, chief among them its darkly famous "14 Karat Cabaret," a bimonthly performance art showcase in its basement bar. MAP also sponsors live jazz a couple times a month.--Hannah Feldman
