Theater best bet: 'Rock of Ages'

Constantine Maroulis (pictured, center) knows a good gig when he finds one. The likeable former "American Idol" contender was seemingly born to play Drew, the rocker-wannabe character at the center of " Rock of Ages."

Maroulis was nominated for a Tony Award for his portrayal in the musical, one of the surprise hits of the 2008-09 Broadway season. And now, he's signed on to star in the national tour.
The show is set in 1987 and purports to be the love story between a small-town girl and a big-haired dreamer who meet in a legendary Los Angeles rock club. But, the musical really is a vehicle for the songs of such iconic '80s groups as Styx, REO Speedwagon and Twisted Sister.
"Ages" also provides an ideal showcase for Maroulis. The singer placed fourth in Season Four of "Idol," and his vocal pyrotechnics on the live stage have received much critical praise.--Mary Carole McCauley
