Union Craft Brewing serves up two foodie events

Founded just last year, Union Craft Brewing has established itself as a major player in Baltimore's craft-beer movement. Tours and tastings are given every Saturday from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. at the brewery's headquarters in Woodberry, in the shadow of the Pepsi sign,

The brewery is also developing into a popular venue for medium-sized events, indoor and out. Parking is easy, and the brewery is steps away from a light rail stop.

On Friday, the brewery is hosting an event called the Truck Party Food Rally, from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m., featuring a group of popular food trucks, including Gypsy Queen, Kommie Pig, Kooper's Chowhound and Sultan. Guests at the event can buy $4 pints of Union Craft beers. A disc jockey named DJ Boh Funk will spin records. The food truck event at Union Craft is not an official Gathering, the name for the regular food truck rallies produced by Damian Bohager.

Then on Sunday, the brewery is teaming up with Slow Food Baltimore and Charm City Food Tours for an afternoon event called Brewery Hops. The $45 ticket includes brewery tours, beer tastings and a three-course meal stationed throughout the brewery building provided by the nearby restaurant Birroteca. Keep on trucking There's more food truck news. The Gathering is coming back. The evening food truck rally, which was running on a weekly schedule back in the fall, is kicking off the 2013 season on Saturday, Feb. 23, at the Castle in Hampden, 34th Street and Keswick Avenue.

The Gatherings are typically scheduled for Friday evenings, but this one is being held from 3 p.m. to 7 on a Saturday. The rally is being filmed for "Second Act," a new lifestyle makeover show hosted by Paul DiMeo of "Extreme Makeover: Home Edition."

"Second Act," which has DiMeo and his associates helping the show's subjects cope with midlife changes, will spotlight the owners of the Iced Gems food truck in the episode being taped at the Gathering. The show will be seen on RLTV, a cable channel pitched at viewers ages 50 and over.

Food pages What if there was a guide to Baltimore's best restaurants, markets and specialty stores, broken down by neighborhood, that told you where the food-lovers' destinations were but didn't neglect the beloved landmarks? And what if you could put the guide in your purse — you know, like a book?

On Thursday, Chazz: A Bronx Original will host a release party for "Food Lovers' Guide to Baltimore," a just-published book from Globe Pequot Press written by Baltimore residents Kathy Wielech Patterson and Neal Patterson.

The book serves up side dishes on food trucks, breweries and wineries, as well as recipes, but its meat is a neighborhood-by-neighborhood breakdown of "Foodie Faves," "Landmarks" and "Specialty Stores, Markets & Producers."

Kathy Patterson said that the write-ups on restaurants aren't reviews. "These are restaurants that we know people like and that we like and that have been recommended to us. And we want to share them with both locals and out-of-towners who are looking for a good place to eat," said Patterson, known in Baltimore food circles for her food and dining blog, Minx Eats.

Patterson acknowledged that it wasn't always easy to commit a favorite to the printed page. "I'm very fickle. My tastes change," she said. "I'm surprised I've been married for 13 years."
