Rita's Italian Ice piloting new custard concept with store in Overlea-Fullerton

Rita’s Italian Ice is testing out a new type of dessert destination with a location in Overlea-Fullerton.

The Pennsylvania-based Italian ice chain is piloting a new creamery concept, Rita’s Italian Ice & Creamery, which will feature hand-dipped frozen custard (with the option to put it on sandwiches made from cookies, brownies and waffles) in addition to its Italian ice offerings.

Each shop will offer a rotating selection of more than 35 hand-scooped frozen custard flavors.

The dessert stop is testing the new concept at 10 locations across the country, including one in Overlea-Fullerton. The existing Rita’s shop at 7698 Belair Road is being retro-fitted with the new concept.

Other cities where the creamery concept is being tested include Los Angeles, Phoenix, Denver and Columbus, Ohio.

The redesigned Rita’s in Overlea-Fullerton is expected to open in mid-September.

In further celebration of frozen custard, Rita’s is offering frozen custard for 99 cents on Tuesday, National Frozen Custard Day.
