Maryland State Fair begins, and other weekend food events

The Maryland State Fair returns on Friday and runs through Sept. 2. Take a look at our top 10 favorite things to eat and drink at the fair. You'll find most of them at the Maryland Foods Pavilion, located across from the Cow Palace.

And what's a state fair without an eating contest? On Saturday, there'll be a Roma Classic Mild Sausage Eating Contest at 12:30 p.m. Employees of the Baltimore-based sausage company will pick contestants out of the crowd. So, hang around in front of the Cow Palace Milking Parlor and wait to be discovered. The winner will be the contestant who finishes 10 Roma Classic Mild Sausages first or finishes the most sausages within five minutes. First prize is two Orioles tickets, $100 cash and 20 pounds of Roma Sausage. The contest will be held again on Sept. 1 at 3 p.m.

The Gathering is back. The Friday night food-truck rally, which took a road-trip last week to Westminster, is back in Baltimore. Participating trucks will be actually be at two venues this Friday night.  Some will be at the Coppermine Du Burns Arena, from 5 p.m. to 10 p.m. The Canton event will include live music by Nine Mile Roots. Other trucks will be at the Inner Harbor's West Shore Park as part of the Summer Socials event, which includes live music by Rollerblades, a children's play area, and wine and beer sales. The Summer Socials event is from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m., but the food trucks are scheduled to stay until midnight.

McCormick World of Flavors is hosting a first birthday party for itself on Saturday. The retail "flavor destination" at Harborplace will be giving away prizes and birthday cake and sampling products. There will be cooking demonstrations from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m..
