TV show to feature Baltimore's bacon

Four Baltimore-area eateries will be featured on Tuesday night's episode of "United States of Bacon," a series on the Destination America channel.

The show sends host Todd Fisher on road trips in search of "mouth-watering, stomach-growl-inducing, sensory-overloading bacon creations."

The Baltimore stops include Dempsey’s Brew Pub and Restaurant, for bacon on a stick, drizzled with Old Bay and served with maple syrup; the Bullpen (that small joint next to Pickles Pub) for the Barnyard Club, a quadruple-decker with pit ham, beef, turkey and bacon; Kloby's Smokehouse for the barbecue in a jar and Bad Decisions, for a concoction of French toast, bacon mac-and-cheese and bacon-wrapped meatloaf.

The Baltimore episode of "United States of Bacon" is on Tuesday at 9 p.m. on Destination America (Comcast 113/Direct TV 286)

Dempsey's will host a viewing party on Tuesday with Rick Dempsey. The doors open at 7:45 p.m.

Viet Pearl in Ellicott City has great food, odd decor

In Howard County, excellent ethnic restaurants pop up in so many unlikely spots that finding a good meal in a nondescript strip mall is no longer surprising. But that doesn't take away from the appreciation of the good food we enjoyed after dinner at Viet Pearl, which opened in Ellicott City in...

The best thing about Baltimore's recent explosion as a great food city is not the increase of excellent high-end restaurants. We love the fancy places, but to our minds, the biggest benefit is in the way the city's casual spots have upped their game.
