Top 10 things to eat at the Maryland State Fair [Pictures]
The Maryland State Fair runs Aug. 22 through Sept. 1. That's 11 days of agricultural exhibitions, competitions, livestock shows and attractions. Of course, there are the midway attractions, too, and food -- lots and lots of food. Here are our favorite things to eat at the Maryland State Fair, including one new treat -- deep-fried Berger cookies.

For better or for worse, the Maryland State Fair is not particularly noted for its deep-frying of unusual food. All that might change this year - yes, get ready for deep-fried Berger cookies (pictured) -- Jim Ingram of Deggeller Attractions, who operates the main deep-fried snacks concessions by the Cow Palace and Exhibition Hall, said he gave the fried Bergers a quiet trial run at the 2013 fair and the response was great.
On the first Saturday of the 2014 fair, your fearless critic ordered up some of the treats -- they're $5 for three -- and guess what? They're great. The not-so-great cookie part of the Berger cookie gets all warm and pillow-y and the chocolate gets hot and gushy. One order is plenty for three people; it took me three days to finish off one order. They're not so great served cold.
