The Greek yogurt craze comes to cream cheese

The Greek yogurt craze comes to cream cheese (February 13, 2013)

We get lots of announcements of new products. We mostly ignore them, but this one got our attention - "the launch of the industry's first Greek Cream Cheese."

Green Mountain Farms Greek Cream Cheese, according to its producer, Franklin Foods of Enosburg Falls, Vt., contains twice the protein and half the fat of regular cream cheese and contains live and active cultures.

The Greek yogurt craze has made its way into the newsroom. You can usually spot a container or two in the refrigerator. We were interested.

Franklin Foods sent over some cream cheese samples.

We set them out with pita chips. Everyone who tried it loved it, and most tasters preferred it to their regular cream cheese. The product has a very subtle yogurt tang, which you probably wouldn't notice at all if someone had subbed it in for regular cream cheese.

Neither did it have the tooth-coating quality that full bodied cream cheese has. So, fans of the real stuff might miss that, but those of us who had switched to low-fat yogurt were taken with the cream cheese's body and texture.

The product comes in an 8-ounce bar as well as 8-ounce and 12-ounce "soft tubs" and 12-ounce "whipped tubs" and is available in the Baltimore area at select Giant and Walmart stores.
