A new restaurant named The Chesapeake will open Monday, according to one of the developers, in Charles North, where another restaurant named the Chesapeake closed more than 20 years ago.
A mainstay of Baltimore dining for decades, the old Chesapeake Restaurant closed in 1987. The property, which sat vacant for decades, was purchased in October 2010 from the city by Michael Shecter and Ernst Valery of Station North Development Partners LLC for $2.5 million.
Their original plans for the Chesapeake project included restaurateur Qayum Karzai, who owns The Helmand, but he pulled out in the spring of 2011.
After Karzai's withdrawal, Enrst Valery formed a new team including himself and his partners in Milk & Honey Market, a gourmet cafe and emporium with branches in Philadelphia and Baltimore's Mount Vernon neighborhood.
Under the terms of the purchase, the developers were to pay the city $500,000 up front and submit 5 percent of gross receipts to the city until an additional $1 million has been paid. They will then pay 2.5 percent of gross receipts to the city until the full $2.5 million has been paid.
Located next door to The Charles Theatre and featuring regional cuisine, classic cocktails and a raw bar, the new Chesapeake will be open for dinner seven nights a week and for Sunday brunch. The executive chef is Jordan Miller, a newcomer to Baltimore. What appears to be an opening menu is posted on the restaurant's website.
