O'Donnell Square memorial for Scunny
Canton's O'Donnell Square was blocked to traffic the evening after Patrick "Scunny" McCusker's funeral for an event dedicated to the late owner of Nacho Mama's and Mama's On The Half Shell. Several hundred people filled the area celebrate the life of the bigger-than-life unofficial "mayor of Canton," while a number of performers provided entertainment on a stage set up in the middle of the square. All the restaurants around the square donated 30% of the night's proceeds to McCusker's favorite charity, Believe In Tomorrow Children's Foundation. Organizations continue to pay tribute to Patrick 'Scunny' McCusker, the Nacho Mama's owner who died Aug. 24 at Peninsula General Hospital in Salisbury after being struck by a bus as he rode a bicycle along Ocean City's Coastal Highway.
McCusker was widely remembered in the days and weeks after his death for his outsize personality and his philanthropic efforts, particularly his work with the Believe in Tomorrow Children's Foundation.
On Saturday, Believe in Tomorrow is dedicating its 30th anniversary benefit and auction at M&T Bank Stadium in McCusker's memory. It will also be permanently naming its Unsung Hero Award, first given to McCusker in 2005, the Patrick 'Scunny' McCusker Unsung Hero Award.
McCusker's wife and children will help present the 2012 award to Virginia Turner. Among the 30 companies and individuals being honored on Saturday are Art Donovan, Brooks Robinson and Len Stoler.
Among the Baltimore restaurants participating in Saturday's benefit are many of Nacho Mama's O'Donnell Square neighbors -- Canton's Portside Tavern, Firehouse Coffee Co., JD's Smokehouse Bar & Grill, Looney's Pub and Tavern on the Square.
On Friday, Seacrets in Ocean City was holding a Scunnypalooza event to raise money for Believe in Tomorrow.
