Samos at Canton Crossing

The new Samos is a spinoff of a Greektown favorite (October 14, 2013)

The new Samos, which opens Monday at The Shops at Canton Crossing, won't be exactly like the original, enduringly popular casual restaurant in Greektown.

For one thing, the new Samos will take credit cards, said Michael Georgalas, whose father, Nicholas, opened Samos on Oldham Street in 1977. For another, the new Samos will be open on Sundays.

The Samos at Canton Crossing, which the younger Georgalas owns and operates with his wife, Valentina, will be a fast-casual restaurant where orders are placed at the counter and brought to the table by food runners.

The Greektown restaurant, which the elder Georgalas began as a conventional sub shop until his popular Greek specialties took over the menu, is known for the long lines of diners waiting for tables in the dining room.

"People will be able to get in and out a little faster," said Georgalas, who grew up working in his family’s restaurant. But some things will stay the same. "We will have all of the favorites from the original," said Georgalas.

Georgalas, who studied finance at the University of Maryland College Park and Loyola University Maryland and worked for T. Rowe Price, said the new Samos, which seats 44, is designed for people who want a quick bite before a shopping trip at Canton Crossing or who are on their way home from work.
