Woman's Industrial Kitchen( Gene Sweeney Jr., Baltimore Sun photo / February 1, 2012 )
The historic lunchroom at the Woman's Industrial Exchange closed this spring after a two-and-a-half-year run. The lunchroom was operated by Irene Smith, owner of Baltimore's popular Souper Freak food truck, as The Woman's Industrial Kitchen.
Smith revived some of the old lunchroom favorites like Miss Marguerite's chicken salad, which she served, as in the old days, with aspic and deviled eggs. And each of the tables was decorated with photographs -- some devoted to a single Marylander such as Billie Holiday, Gertrude Stein, Emily Post or ichthyologist Eugenie Clark. Some were devoted to Maryland singers, athletes, teachers, comedians and even journalists.
