La Folie Steak Frites & Wine Bar replacing Tavern on the Square in Canton

A classic French bistro serving steak frites is replacing Tavern on the Square in Canton.

La Folie Steak Frites & Wine Bar is nearing its opening Canton.

The French bistro will replace Tavern on the Square at 2903 O'Donnell St. Tavern on the Square closed May 28 after more than four years in business, and the space is undergoing cosmetic renovations before reopening as La Folie, on track for June 29.

Bill Irvin owns the new restaurant, and he's partnering with Tavern on the Square's owners. Irvin previously opened Falafelicious in the Shops at Canton Crossing, which closed after just a few months.

As he started thinking about his next venture, Irvin said he wanted to add something new to Baltimore's culinary scene and offer good food at affordable prices. He also had a recent trip to Paris on his mind.

"Where in Baltimore can you get a great steak at a fair price?" he said. "There's plenty of great places to get fabulous steak, but it's going to cost you a little bit of money."

As the restaurant's name promises, the signature dish at La Folie will be steak frites — steak and unlimited fries with a choice of soup or salad for $24. La Folie will also offer a salmon option at the same price, as well as portobello mushrooms for vegetarians. The menu will include burgers, as well.

Wine will run $6 to $12 per glass, with appetizers in the same price range. The restaurant will also serve craft beer and cocktails.

La Folie will open at 3 p.m. Wednesdays through Fridays, with brunch on Saturdays and Sundays starting at 10 a.m. The restaurant will be closed on Mondays and Tuesdays.
