La Cakerie to open Hampden location

La Cakerie is bringing its sweets to the Avenue in Hampden.

La Cakerie is opening a new location on the Avenue in Hampden.

The bakery, which has shops in Towson and Mount Vernon, is building out a space in Hampden and aiming to open in the first quarter of 2016.

Jason Hisley, La Cakerie's owner and executive chef, said he had been searching for about two years for a space in Hampden.

"Hampden was just so up-and-coming with restaurants and food, and really it's become an amazing food destination,” Hisley said.

He said he saw a dearth of "celebration bakeries" there — places that can provide cakes, cupcakes and other delicacies for special events such as birthdays, weddings and other parties.

La Cakerie is moving into the former Chesapeake Pawn location at 1027 W. 36th St. Hisley said the space doesn't need too much work, but look for a fresh coat of hot pink paint on the walls when the shop opens.

"We want to bring a little bit of that modern, funky chic that we have at our other stores,” he said.

In addition to baked goods, the bakery will offer espresso and coffee drinks, as well as breakfast pastries, quiches and other morning fare. Hisley said he's hoping to partner with local restaurants, too.

Hisley, who previously won the Food Network's "Cupcake Wars," recently made it to the top three on another Food Network special, "Halloween Baking Championship."

He's looking to hire about five core employees to staff the store.
