A Preakness goodwill tour

Accompanied by Baltimore Mayor Howard W. Jackson and his wife, the Preakness Queen Mrs. W. W. Lanaham, and her court, embarked on a three-day, eight-city promotional goodwill tour of Maryland in the weeks leading up to the 1936 Preakness. "[The tour was] designed to make first the State and then the nation Preakness-conscious," The Baltimore Sun reported. In the photograph, Mrs. Lanaham, second from left, enjoys dinner at the Chester River Yacht Club in Chestertown with Mayor Jackson (left) and his wife, who is seated next to Chestertown mayor Phillip B. Wilmer. Mrs. W.B. Usilton III is the party's other guest.
