Baltimore outpaced the national rate of restaurant growth in 2012, according to a recent restaurant census conducted by the NPD Group, a leading global information company.

There were 4,442 more restaurants in the U.S. in fall 2012 than there were in fall 2011, according to the Fall 2012 Recount survey, which includes restaurants open as of Sept. 30, 2012. The percentage increase was .7 percent.

Baltimore, according to the survey, had a total of 5,662 restaurants as of Sept. 30, an increase of 66 units from the previous year, an increase of 1.2 percent.

The survey gives separate sub-counts for chain and independent restaurants. Chains grew by 1.1 percent nationally and 1.8 percent in Baltimore. Independent restaurants grew by just .4 percent nationally and .8 percent in Baltimore.

Nationally, most of the increase in units were in the quick service restaurant segment - think Chipotle, Noodles & Co.
