3. City Café

Although they share little other than the same roaster, City Café in Mount Vernon is the urban, fast-paced version of The Evergreen, offering up more space (divided between the restaurant and the coffee shop) and louder music (here, it's forever '80s). Although the cup of joe is still a winner here, cold-brewed iced coffee, hand-mixed frozen cappuccinos and coffee drinks with liquor add some punch to standard coffee shop concoctions. The crowd is a little more diverse than at other shops, but there's also the usual hodgepodge of folks whiling away the hours.--Martin Johnson
