I made last-minute adjustments to the ranking of this list as I was writing up the captions for this photo gallery. My gut guided me. I'd consult my memories, the online menus, and the reviews I wrote about them (or Elizabeth Large wrote).
When I found myself thinking, "I want to go there now," that told me something. When I didn't get that feeling, it told me I had ranked a restaurant too highly. Nothing on the list slid obviously into position. This juggling was a barrel of monkeys compared to the decision of which restaurants to include on the list. I stand by what I've come up with. 50. Abacrombie Fine Foods and Accommodations
The countdown begins with two question marks. First, why does Jerry Pellegrino's Mount Vernon restaurant, Abacrombie, with all of its potential, seem so quiet?

Add / View comments | Discussion FAQThe basic reason you gave for leaving off Tio Pepe's on Dan Rodrick's Midday radio show was "to see what the reaction would be"? And you haven't been there in 3 years if I heard that correctly? And somehow by omitting it you did Tio's "some good"? My BS-o-meter just went off.
My wife and I have been celebrating every occasion (anniversaries, birthdays, friends from out of town, etc.) at Tio Pepe's for 35 years. Why? Because it hands down has the best, most consistent food in town. And it will still be here serving the best food in town the next time you indulge yourelf in such a list-- something that can't be said for 95 percent of the restaurants you did name.
Terribly disappointed - a lot of small and 2nd rate restaurants with
inconsistent food and service. The pride of Baltimore should be and
has been consistently Tio Pepes. Thank goodness we dine there at least
every 3 months and find their food and service consistent, delicious and
of excellent quality. Certainly cannot say that for many of the restaurants
on your top 50!
I am shocked at Samos Restaurant not being mentioned in this list! Sad day for Marylanders when the Sun Food critic negates mentioning a fine restaurant with excellent food and prices given the current economic times.
