Grants, studies and appointments
•Dr. Carole Miller is the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society's National Woman of the Year.
Miller, a nationally recognized expert in the treatment of leukemia and lymphoma and director of the St. Agnes Cancer Center, was among 195 candidates for the title, which is given to the person who raises the most money for the society.
Miller raised more than $122,000, a Maryland chapter record, and $40,000 more than the runner-up. She used a variety of grass-roots strategies for her fundraising campaign, including letter-writing, basket bingo, a casino night and a silent auction. The money will fund research programs and patient services in Maryland.
Overall, the contest raised more than $7 million. The society was to present Miller with the award yesterday at the National Woman of the Year Conference in Miami.
•Johns Hopkins Hospital recently earned the top spot in the U.S. News & World Report's annual rankings of American hospitals. The hospital has been on the list 18 times.
The hospital accumulated 30 points in 15 of 16 specialties; it ranked first in ear, nose and throat, rheumatology and urology; second in geriatrics, gynecology and obstetrics, neurology and neurosurgery, ophthalmology and psychiatry; third in cancer, digestive diseases, endocrinology, heart disease and heart surgery, and respiratory disorders; sixth in kidney disease and orthopedics; and 15th in rehabilitation.
•Dr. Neil Rosenshein, medical director of the Weinberg Center for Women's Health & Medicine at Mercy Medical Center, recently received the Lifetime Achievement in Women's Health Award at the Achieving Success in Women's Health Conference in Baltimore. The award recognizes an individual dedicated to women's health.
Rosenshein is a gynecologic oncologist and a leader in the field of gynecologic malignancies. He has been the director of the Gynecology Center at Mercy since 1995 and medical director of the Weinberg Center since 2000.
The conference was put on by the Snowmass Institute, a women's health think-tank.
