Sanford J. Ungar, president of Goucher College
Five Things I Have To Have Now
Sanford J. Ungar was an editor for The Atlantic, managing editor of Foreign Policy magazine, staff writer of the Washington Post , a host on National Public Radio and director of Voice of America. But of all his jobs, he likes his current one, being president of Goucher College, the best.
The feeling seems to be mutual. The school has extended his contract to 2013, applications are up 70 percent since he took office and a $48 million library and student center are under construction. The school has gained national attention with the decision in 2005 to become the country's first liberal arts campus to require all students to study abroad.
"I love my current role," Ungar said.
In his leisure time, Ungar, 62, also enjoys spending time with his family, sawing wood to burn in his fireplace and swimming.
1. 24 hours/7 days a week, access to an Olympic size swimming pool
"So, I could swim whenever I wanted to or needed to."
2. Helicopter
"I live on campus and in Washington D.C. I'd like a helicopter to commute back and forth."
3. Learn more languages
"I speak French and Spanish. I would like to learn two more foreign languages - one of them being Mandarin Chinese and either German or Russian."
4. Another published book
"I've written six books. I would like to publish a book on higher education and sort of a memoir."
5. A family escape
"I'd like for us to spend time with each other with no e-mail. We could read books, play Scrabble, exercise and swim for six months.
