'She Kills Monsters'( March 26, 2013 )
This funny, moving and delightfully geeky standout of this year's Garage Rep is staged by Buzz22 Chicago, a young theater company formed by very talented graduates of Northwestern University. The roles are so well-cast, you might think they created the show -- which is not to be missed by those who spent their happiest hours playing Dungeons & Dragons. But it's actually the work of a Vietnamese-American scribe named Qui Nguyen. Nerds, Nguyen argues in "She Kills Monsters," had yet to become hip back in the ancient days of the 1990s. But one could still see the germ of their post-digital glory days. - Chris Jones
Garage Rep runs through April 21 in the Steppenwolf Garage Theatre, 1624 N. Halsted St.; $20 at 312-335-1650 or steppenwolf.org.
