Real Housewives of New York City premiere recap, dinner parties, blackmail and newbies

To be honest, I was planning on boycotting "The Real Housewives of New York City" after they fired half of the cast and kept the craziest of the bunch for season 5. But I am so happy I decided to watch it because these newbies bring some new drama and I am so excited to see how this season turns out.

"Meeting" each other In classic "Real Housewives" fashion, the new cast members are always a "friend" of one of the current cast members and there just so happens to be a party that another housewife is hosting. Naturally, the current cast member invites the new one to the party. So, in this episode, all the women met a Sonja's party and each one quickly sized up the next. But one of the best parts about the party was Aviva totally fan girl-ing Carole since she had recently read her best selling autobiography.

The attempted confrontation/the blackmail With every "Real Housewives of New York City" get-together there has to be some sort of confrontation and Luanne was quick to approach Ramona about how she criticized her parenting last season. Luanne was not ready to back down from this one and she cornered Ramona at the party with the intention of airing out their differences. But of course nobody puts Ramona in the corner and she goes all crazy eyes and tells Luanne she isn't feeling well and she doesn't want to "go there." It isn’'t until Luanne's quick chat with the newbies when we find out that Ramona tried "blackmailing" her about an incident that happened at her son's 15th birthday party. Really Ramona? I am totally convinced that the woman has more "Ramona Pino" in her system than water. The woman is crazy and delusional. Even the newbies point out that children are off limits.

The competition: who has the saddest life story? I have to say that I am trying really hard to welcome these new women with an open mind but one thing that really caught me off guard is how open and intent they are about talking about their tragic lives. It seems like Bravo looked for the most successful yet heartbreaking women. First, Carole is a widow who lost her husband to cancer. Next we have Aviva who lost one of her legs in a freak accident on a farm when she was a kid. And finally we have Heather who will take any opportunity she can to talk about her son who needed a liver transplant at six months and her father who died a few weeks ago. I do feel for you, Heather, but is it necessary to bring it up when you are having a light-hearted conversation with people you just met?

And the backlash of Ramona begins… I am not a Ramona fan so it comforted me to know that the new ladies see straight through her. Heather immediately got the cold shoulder from her when she and her husband insulted her for interrupting all the time (which is slightly true but not okay to say to someone you just met). Aviva also saw her harshness when she embarrassed Sonja in front of the whole dinner party when she called her out for accidently calling her ex-husband her husband. And well Carole hasn't spent much time with her yet, but let's be real here, she's way too smart and professional to be friends with someone like Ramona.

False hopes and expectations At the end of the episode the newbies are sitting at lunch and reflecting on some of the crazy behavior they witnessed over the past couple of days. Aviva says with confidence, "I don'’t want us to become mean girls." Such a rookie thing to say… Aviva, you have NO idea what these women are capable of and before you know it, you will be having a "confrontation" at the next dinner party.

Anyway, this season looks extremely promising with vacations, catfights, and new friendships in our near primetime future. I am certainly looking forward to watching the drama unfold.
