Here’s how it works now: Contestants have survived the Blind Auditions and weeks of Battle Rounds, just to make it to this moment — the Knockouts.
The rules are no steals, no saves, choose your own song, choose the right song and compete against your own teammate in the sudden death round, which leaves each coach with four contestants who will move on to the live playoffs. Sounds simple, right?
Did I mention the part about performing the song in front of the audience and your teammate? Yes, it became pretty intense and the camera was sure to capture the opponents' nervous looks.
Last night, coaches Adam and Shakira watched as some of their favorites competed against each other for a chance to move on to the play offs, and compete to become the voice.
Team Adam: Amber Carrington, “I’m with You” by Avril Lavigne vs. Midas Whale, “Higher Ground” by Stevie Wonder
In the first battle of the night, Team Adam’s Amber Carrington faced folk duo Midas Whale. It was the battle of opposites as the competition's resident country star Amber performed Avril Lavigne’s pop/rock hit “I’m With You," while folk duo Midas Whale put the Midas touch on the Stevie Wonder classic, “Higher Ground.” After much consideration Adam decided to send Midas Whale home, and give Amber Carrington a chance to compete in the live playoffs.
Team Shakira: Garret Gardner, “Too Close” by Alex Clare vs. Tawnya Reynolds, “Hell on Heels” by Miranda Lambert
Team Shakira’s comeback-kid Garret performed the Alex Clare hit “Too Close” while country vocalist and yodeler Tawnya Reynolds performed Miranda Lambert’s “Hell on Heels.” While Garret earned praise for his confidence during his performance, it was Tawnya and her yodels that fired up the judges. While Blake found the yodeling to be too much, Usher complimented it. However it wasn’t up to Blake or Usher to decide, as the decision came down to coach Skakira. She went with Garret, knocking Tawnya out of the competition.
Team Adam: Amy Whitcomb, “House of the Rising Sun” by The Animals vs. Caroline Glaser, “Little Talks” by Of Monsters and Men
Was I the only one who didn’t know they were best friends?
Coach Adam paired Amy Whitcomb with Caroline Glaser. In what was one of the night's least entertaining performances, Amy Whitcomb performed the classic “House of the Rising Sun” (cut to Caroline’s shocked face and “wow” during the end) while her friend and component Caroline Glaser performed a modern hit by Of Monsters and Men. While coaches Shakira and Blake liked the girl’s performance, it was their coach Adam who felt each girl “performed better in rehearsal.” After careful thought, Coach Adam decided to go with the angelic voice of Caroline Glaser, sending Amy home.
Team Shakira: Kris Thomas, “What a Wonderful World” by Louis Armstrong vs. Mary Miranda, “Every Breath You Take” by The Police
Defined by risk, Team Shakira’s resident crooner Kris Thomas faced off against Latin diva Mary Miranda. While Thomas performed “What a Wonderful World” the coaches were stunned at Mary’s decision to sing English, and perform “Every Breath You Take” by The Police. Both artist were complimented on their tone, and not song choice, but in the end, Kris won Shakira’s heart, and knocked Mary out of the competition.
Team Adam: Judith Hill, “Always on My Mind” by Willie Nelson vs. Orlando Dixon, “All My Life” by K-C & Jojo
Sending in two of his biggest voices, coach Adam sent Judith Hill and Orlando Dixon into the Knockout round. While Judith Hill followed all the rules during her performance of Willie Nelson’s “Always on My Mind." Orlando Dixon played it safe with the K-C and Jojo hit “All My Life.” Before Coach Adam made his final decision, Usher “stroked Judith’s ego,” Blake wanted her to punch him in the face and Shakira gave Orland praise. In the end Judith held no punches as she knocked Orlando Dixon out of the competition and landed a spot in the live playoffs.
Team Shakira: Karina Iglesias, “Are You Gonna Go My Way” Lenny Kravitz vs. Monique Abbadie, “The Power of Love” by Celine Dion
Rocker Karina Iglesias performed the Lenny Kravitz hit “Are You Gonna Go My Way” against Monique Abbadie and her rendition of Celine Dion’s “The Power of Love.” Both ladies earned praises from each coach, but it was time for their coach Shakira to give them a little bit of tough love. While Shakira thought both ladies performed to the best of their abilities, she also had a little to say about their overperforming of each song. In the end, Karina moved on the next round.
Team Adam: Warren Stone, “(I Just) Died in Your Arms Tonight” by Cutting Crew vs. Sarah Simmons, “Wild Horses” The Rolling Stones
It was the battle of the fireman vs. the flower child. Both members of Team Adam chose to step outside of their comfort zone by performing classic-rock ballads. While Warren melted the hearts of the ladies in the audience with his rendition of the Cutting Crew's “(I Just) Died in Your Arms Tonight," Sarah Simmons blew the judges away and knocked out her competition.
Team Shakira: Sasha Allen, “At Last” by Etta James vs. Shawna P. “Maybe I’m Amazed” by Paul McCartney
Sidebar: Where has Sasha Allen been hiding that amazing voice all season?
In the night's “I Wouldn’t Want to Go After That” performance, Sasha faced Shawna P.” While both ladies delivered with amazing voices, it was Blake who declared it, “The best Knockout performance he has seen so far.” In the surprise of the night, Sasha delivered goosebumps to her coach, and knocked veteran rocker Shawna P. out of the competition.
With one more performance from Team Adam and a full roster of competition on coaches Blake and Usher's teams, who do you want to see knock out the competition and vote for in the live playoffs?
