For the final night of battle rounds, coaches put the final members of their teams head-to-head to see who had what it takes to make it to next week’s knockout rounds.
Team CeeLo: Jonny Gray vs. Shawn “Big Sexy” Smith
“Refugee” by Tom Petty
Two of team CeeLo’s rock 'n' roll and armed forces veterans were pitted against one anither in the first Army vs. Air Force battle in "The Voice" history. Former Airman Jonny Gray faced Army sergeant turned singing-bartender Shawn “Big Sexy” Smith. During their rehearsals, Coach CeeLo and mentor Miguel wanted to challenge the guys not only vocally, but on their ability to connect with the audience. In the end, it was Jonny who won the hearts of all the coaches and the spot on team CeeLo in next week’s knock-out rounds.
Team Adam: Barry Black vs. Preston Pohl
“I Wish it Would Rain” by The Temptations
Everyone loves a little soul, and Team Adam’s Barry Black and Preston Pohl delivered it during their performance of The Temptations' classic. Although it was hard for Coach Adam to get them to find the perfect harmonies in rehearsal, when it came down to show time, Barry (and his vocal horn) and Preston pulled it together and had a classic battle. While all of the judges were swayed in favor of Barry, it was up to Coach Adam to determine who would stay for the knockout rounds. Adam chose to go with Preston, sending Barry home.
In unaired performances, Coach Blake completed his team by choosing Brandon Chase and Holly Henry to advance to the next level of the competition. Coach CeeLo added Tamera Chauniece to his roster.
Team Christina: Olivia Henken vs. Stephanie Anne Johnson
“Done” by The Band Perry
In the final battle of the night, Coach Christina and mentor Ed Sheeran wanted the mortgage broker and cruise ship singer to bring their attitude (and waves of their finger). While the song was more Olivia’s style, Stephanie learned the words and made it her own. Just when you think you have it all figured out, "The Voice" shocks you: Christina decided to declare Olivia the winner of the battle round, sending Stephanie back to sing on the cruise ship…until CeeLo pressed his button and got her in the steal.
Aside: How sweet was Stephanie’s grandma?
Now that the battles are over, it’s time for the champions to try and hold onto their spots on their teams. No more teammates; it’s time for everyone to stand alone and pick a song that will help them gain a spot in the Top 12. Oh yes, the twist: This season, each coach has a chance to save one more contestant in a steal.Copyright © 2014, The Baltimore Sun
