Take-Two Interactive announced that “BioShock Infinite” will be pushed back from an Oct. 16 release to Feb. 26, 2013. The reasoning for the delay was stated in a press release by Ken Levine, Creative Director of Irrational Games, which is developing “Infinite” for Take-Two.
“When we announced the release date of BioShock Infinite in March, we felt pretty good about the timing. Since then, we’ve uncovered opportunities to make Infinite into something even more extraordinary. Therefore, to give our talented team the time they need to deliver the best Infinite possible, we’ve decided to move the game’s release to February.”
Levine can only be taken at his word, so there shouldn’t be cause for concern about the quality of what looks to be a grand third entry into the “BioShock” series. On Irrational Games’ own website, Levine spoke in further detail about the delay and noted that the developers underwent a similar experience with the original “BioShock.
It’s also interesting to note that we probably won’t see much more of “BioShock: Infinite” until the game’s release. Levine noted that the team at Irrational Games wasn’t going to focus on preparing new material for E3 or Gamescom. “Preparing for these events takes time away from development, time we’re going to use instead to get the best version of Infinite into your hands in February,” Levine wrote.
The waiting may be a disappointment after the healthy dose of info Irrational released about the game early this year, but the anticipation should only build for what looks to be potential juggernaut. The formula appears incredibly solid, building on the success of the first two “BioShock” games while taking the player to a completely imaginative and original landscape in the steampunkish cloud city of Columbia.
While it seems like the concerns are purely emanating from a developmental concern for making the best game possible, the crowded fall-winter 2012 release window (particularly for shooters) does also make some business sense, even if it means missing out on the holiday sales boon. Levine boldly states that Irrational is “doing things nobody has ever done in a first-person shooter.” Perhaps the icing on the cake for the developers is that there’s no danger of “Infinite” now being lost in the shuffle.
For the gamer looking forward to “Infinite” as well as “Call of Duty: Black Ops 2,” “Halo 4” and “Assassin’s Creed III,” your fall schedule just eased up a bit.
