1. William Donald Schaefer dies

William Donald Schaefer, the dominant political figure of the last half-century of Maryland history, died April 18 after a "do-it-now" career that championed projects that transformed Baltimore: Harborplace, Camden Yards, the National Aquarium, the Convention Center and the light rail among them. He was 89. He lay in state at both the State House and City Hall. Jed Kirschbaum / The Baltimore Sun
