1. William Donald Schaefer dies

William Donald Schaefer, the dominant political figure of the last half-century of Maryland history, died April 18 after a "do-it-now" career that championed projects that transformed Baltimore: Harborplace, Camden Yards, the National Aquarium, the Convention Center and the light rail among them. He was 89. He lay in state at both the State House and City Hall.Jed Kirschbaum / The Baltimore Sun
