Shocker -- Heavy Seas Ale House is known for its beer. Lots of great, locally brewed beer. But when they do beer cocktails, they do them right. One of our "non-hot," warmer drink picks, Lost Cargo ($9.50) does, in fact, make you feel a bit seasonally fuzzy inside. Using a good amount of their tasty Peg Leg Imperial Stout, blended unconventionally with Woodford Reserve bourbon and port, it's a "perfect non-beer drinker cocktail," says head bartender Dan Bueter. Ask him to pour you one, and he lights up, like, forgive us, a Christmas tree.
With the bourbon and the Peg Leg, Bueter, sporting a luxurious beard which we really hope he keeps around for at least the holiday season, mixes in a few dashes of bitters before the real magic begins. "Now here's where it gets fun," he says, while getting his spices ready, a mixture of cinnamon, nutmeg, cloves, ginger and cardamom.
Sparks happen. Literal sparks. He lights a paper cocktail stirrer with a lighter, sprinkles in the spices and toasts them. And with the first sniff you smell it all -- delicious, welcoming, comforting. The spices work perfectly with the beer, the beer works perfectly with the bourbon and port. It perfectly warms you.
"Beer cocktails are a wonderful thing," Bueter says. The man knows what he's talking about.
