Spiked Cider at Golden West( Josh Sisk, for The Baltimore Sun / December 10, 2013 )
Regulars at hungover-hipster mainstay Golden West begin asking for it before it's on the menu -- GW's signature seasonal hot drink that'll warm up any Avenue shopper.
"October," says general manager Kris Gobeil, noting when he begins to hear the eager Spiked Cider ($6.25) questions from customers (the drink is available from about November through March). "People just know it." And they know it's a cider with an awesome kick.
The cider is the key here -- fresh apple cider provided by a local farm, kept warm all day. And while some bars may indiscriminately throw a few cloves in a hot drink, Golden West keeps the cloves in the cider all day. "Everything marinates," Gobeil says. Don't forget the sprinkle of cinnamon
Then comes the alcohol -- the flavorful Rogue Hazelnut Spice Rum and Goldschlager, everyone's favorite worst memory from college. Your tongue actually tingles with the first few sips. Seriously.
No wonderful this little guy is so popular.
