Toasted Toddy at Bad Decisions( Josh Sisk, for The Baltimore Sun / December 10, 2013 )
Bad Decisions owner John Reusing has been (legally) playing with fire for years, so he knows his way around winter beverages. The Toasted Toddy ($7) is a self-warming take on the classic cocktail. Reusing warms bourbon in a microwave, pours it in a glass and sets it on fire. The bourbon gives off a ruddy blue fire, which isn't that exciting. To spruce it up, Reusing adds ground nutmeg, which whooshes up in a yellow flame, sparkling at the edges. Then he blows it out. The whole show is over in a second.
"If you let it burn longer, you'll have less alcohol," Reusing said, "so let's face it -- who would want to do that?"
Once it cools down a bit, the Toasted Toddy rolls across your palate all too easily. You can barely taste the Bulleit bourbon; it's like crawling back into bed after you've gotten up in the middle of the night. Ahh.
