For most of us, playing with lasers and special effects is the stuff of a science fiction movie. That's not the case for 25-year-old Nisha Ramnath, Image Engineering's director of visual design.
The Ohio native graduated from MICA with a degree in animation with a specialization in stop-motion and now lives in Station North. Ramnath's job includes thinking of new and interesting ways to use special effects for different events.
"The general goal for our special-effects design is to help our clients achieve memorability to having a longer lasting impression on their audiences," she said.
Some of her past multimedia projects include the Power Plant holiday laser light show in the Inner Harbor, and the dancing Ray Lewis which was projected on the Waterfront Marriott last year. She also designs for "A Monumental Occasion," the annual monument lighting in Mount Vernon Place (5 p.m.-8 p.m. Thursday). Ramnath has been working on the monument lighting for two years. "It's all about bringing a new twist [to the event] that keeps the audience excited," she said
Ramnath took a break from playing with her lasers to talk with us about her favorite special effect, drinks in Baltimore and what she loves about the Washington Monument lighting.
Worst pet peeve? People who spend more time complaining about something instead of fixing it
What song/songs are you loving/hating right now? I love "Team" by Lorde. I hate "City of Angels" by Thirty Seconds to Mars.
Your worst habit? Not calling people, and not maintaining strong bonds with friends and family that are far away.
TV show(s) you can't get enough of? "Law & Order: SVU."
Favorite and most loathed fashion statement? Favorite: Layering. Loathed: Huge brand names, logos and text on clothes.
Last great meal you had? A great veggie wrap with ginger carrot french fries from the Crown.
Favorite place to get a drink in Baltimore? I can justify three as the best for different reasons: The Crown because it's homey, Club Charles because someone I know is always there and Brewer's Art because the beer is great and you can only get those tastes there.
Best advice you ever got? "Don't worry if you're qualified, just know you can do it given the chance."
Favorite/least favorite special effect? I love lasers. My kitten is named Laser. I can't say that I don't like any effects specifically, but I [would say] I don't like effects that are not well planned/choreographed.
Favorite part of the monument lighting? The dedicated crowd. Before I worked for Image I used to live in Mount Vernon, and I went to the monument lighting, so I've been on both sides.
Favorite thing about Baltimore? The DIY spirit. Spaces and events make the city original, not brands or corporations.
