Ahhhh, the Dark and Stormy. That unmistakable sweetness that only Gosling's Black Seal can provide, mixed with the bite of ginger beer.
It's the perfect anytime drink despite its reputation for being "tropical," I've had a DnS with eggs for brunch and at closing time alike, and it's good every time.
One of the best Dark and Stormies you can find in the city is Riverside's neighborhood favorite Captain Larry's. Formerly owned by a City Police officer (Captain Larry), now-owner Ivars Balodis and company have kept Larry's fascination with Gosling's alive. "It was here when we took over the place, it's a great drink. Why would we mess with it?" Balodis said.
But maybe I should expand on what Balodis means by "mess with it." Your normal Dark and Stormy has roughly a full glass of ginger beer with 2 oz. of rum. The Stormy at Captain Larry's? 6 oz. A six-second pour of Gosling's, which layers on top of the ginger beer in an almost black and tan fashion, creates a drink that you can either take top to bottom, bottom to top or mix together to form a powerful tasty beverage.
The best part? The Dark and Stormy is normally $6.50, a low price to be sure. When it's raining, sleeting, snowing or what have you — dark and stormy out — the drink is half price. A great reason to leave the house when the weather isn't so great. Enjoy responsibly. It's a kicker.
