"It sounds like a giant cliche, but becoming a dad made me want to set an example for my son ... that by focusing and persevering, you can do amazing things," said the 32-year-old attorney who lives in Catonsville.
He put in some hard work, Camden. After "a life of being virtually completely uninterested in physical activity," the race also allows the chance for him to help raise money for the Women's Law Center of Maryland (you can check out his fundraiser page at crowdrise.com/WLCmarathon/fundraiser/barrettking). King talked to b about the best music to listen to while running, his orange and purple wardrobe and more.
Worst pet peeve? Drivers who won't use a turn signal. In a city unfriendly for public transportation, this is a frustration I can't escape!
Last concert/gig you went to? You had to ask right after I went to see a 63-year old man in concert, didn't you? My last show was Bruce Springsteen at Nationals Park; but I love small Baltimore venues like Ottobar. Dillinger Escape Plan at Ottobar is a can't-miss.
Best music to listen to when running? Rap and metal. But never rap-metal. We learned our lesson in the '90s.
Your worst habit? I bite my nails. It's terrible.
Running inspiration? I get to be alone with my thoughts and my music. I try to look at it as an escape and not so much a chore.
Last great meal you had? The Ambassador Dining Room in Homewood. Part of having a great meal is having it with great people, and my wife, Kristen, is an amazing person to share a good meal with.
Favorite place to get a drink? Lately, Johnny Rad's. My best friend, Ginger, lives on that side of town and I dig all the skateboard decks on the walls.
Favorite and most loathed fashion statements? Most loathed: hipster glasses. Favorite: Wearing orange for my O's and purple for my Ravens. Lucky they're my two favorite colors to begin with.
Best advice you ever got? "Don't move to Baltimore." I'm a contrarian. I did move to Baltimore, and I'm in love with this city.
Favorite thing about Baltimore? Baltimore is more than a city, it's a statement about who its citizens are. Those of us who get it, get it.
