As an Army brat, Katy Clark describes herself as "from everywhere and nowhere in particular." However, Clark, a 41-year-old IT systems engineer, graphic designer and artist, has managed to create a sense of home in Hampden.
Two years ago, Clark's neighbor, Steve Baker, the manager of Hampdenfest's toilet bowl race, asked Clark to participate. She recruited some fellow retired Charm City Roller Girl teammates and is now a regular toilet bowl racing veteran. "It's a gravity-powered, single elimination race on a human defecation device," said Clark. "Fearless participants required." Hampdenfest, the neighborhood arts festival on W. 36th St., kicks off Saturday and the toilet bowl race starts at 2:30 p.m. Clark talked to us about Miley Cyrus' twerking, pajama bottoms and more.
Worst pet peeve? When people say "irregardless."
What songs are you loving/hating right now? Liking "Sun" by Two Door Cinema Club. I will always hate "Ironic" by Alanis Morissette. (Did nobody tell her what irony means?)
Last concert/gig you went to? Adam Ant at the 9:30 Club. My friend Lisa would want me to mention that he is 58 and that's why he's so fat.
Your worst habit? Forgetting my iPhone charger every … darn … day.
Trend that has exceeded its natural lifespan? Twerking. Miley made it jump the shark.
Last movie you liked/disliked? Loved "A Band Called Death." Hated "The Tree of Life" — way too long, way too stupid.
TV show you can't get enough of? "RuPaul's Drag Race."
Favorite and most loathed fashion statement? If an item of clothing is black, it's good in my book. My neighborhood's current trend is pajama bottoms at the Royal Farm store. These are never acceptable as outerwear.
Last great meal you had? Korean gyros at Rocket to Venus are super good.
Favorite place to get a drink? See above. I'm there more often than I ought to be.
Best advice you ever got? "Hey Katy, you should try out for roller derby" – Iona Handgun.
Second best advice you ever got? "Hey Katy, you should ride this toilet down a hill" – Steve Baker.
Best toilet bowl racing tactic? Avoid the Gas Man.
Favorite thing about Baltimore? Baltimore is what you make it. It can be a real jerk sometimes, but most of the time I'm proud to live here.
