Video games are a childhood staple. And, to many, the virtual pull of the fantasy worlds never loses its power.
For John DeCampos, the sountracks of his childhood games have continued to stick with him. "[Video games] are an all encompassing piece of entertainment," said DeCampos, 30, who works in member services at EPS Industry Alliance. "It's moving art, music and story. Video games have everything." In 2005, when the video game music scene was sparsely populated, DeCampos and a friend started a band, Entertainment System, with the aim to tackle classic video game music, but with a metal rock bent. Now a drummer with a similar group, Rare Candy, DeCampos pounds away on the drums to instrumentals to some of the most famous video game tunes of all time.
Rare Candy will be taking the stage at Rams Head Live on Saturday as part of Bit Gen Gamer Fest, a daylong celebration of geek culture and video game music, which DeCamps helped launch. In the meantime, DeCampos took time out of his schedule to talk Miley Cyrus, nail biting and Super Smash Bros.
Worst pet peeve? When people chew with their mouth open its disgusting and drives me insane. even to the point where I have to ask my close friends to please stop in front of other people which I also hate doing.
What song/songs are you loving/hating right now? "We Can't Stop" by Miley Cyrus for some reason has me hooked. I think its a great summer party song and I'm 90 percent sure the pre-chorus has a gameboy tone in it. Stuff I hate is pretty much all mainstream rap. It's dumb.
Your worst habit? I bite my nails until there are just stubs there.
Trend that has exceeded its natural lifespan? Saying "YOLO."
Last movie you liked? "Pacific Rim." It was live-action anime. How could you not like that?
Favorite video game? I maintain that "Super Mario 64" is the best game ever at least for single player. Multi-player, I gotta go with "Super Smash Bros. Melee." Favorite game soundtrack is "Ducktails," though.
TV show(s) you can't get enough of? "Game of Thrones," "Breaking Bad," "Chopped," "The Wire" (which I recently just started watching) and football (CAAAAWWWW!!!).
Favorite and most loathed fashion statement? Pants worn hanging around one's a--. Why? Just why? It looks so dumb and is totally nonfunctional.
Last great meal you had? Cheeseburger sub with gravy fries and a side of hush puppies at Crabtowne USA.
Favorite place to get a drink? Sidebar Tavern.
Best advice you ever got? "Slow down on the drinks before our set, dude"
Favorite thing about Baltimore? The arts Scene and the people. Oh, and the local concerts and bands, the food, the Ravens, the theatre scene, the Baltimore Rock Opera Society! Uh ... everything. I love Baltimore ... forever.
