Ellie Cattle has an impressive collection of musical talents: violin, viola, cello, and most recently, guitar and mandolin.
And she'll show off her talent this weekend at the Privateer Festival in Fells Point (Friday-Sunday; fellspointmainstreet.org), playing violin for award-winning group the Pyrates Royale. You can check out the group performing traditional maritime, Irish and English folk music on Saturday at 11:00 a.m. and 2:45 p.m. or Sunday at 1:30 p.m. and 5:15 p.m.
Cattle joined the group as the fiddler after her old private viola teacher vacated the position for a long-term gig out of town. It was originally supposed to be temporary, but five years later she's still very much involved.
When Cattle is not performing with the group, she's a full-time student at George Mason University in Fairfax, Va., studying criminology with a minor in Chinese.
Cattle took a break from school and work to talk about weird music faces, favorite fashion statement and more.
Worst pet peeve? It changes from day to day, actually. Today, I'm going to say it's noisy chewers.
What songs are you loving and hating right now? I've been really into Panic! At the Disco's newest CD, specifically [the songs] "Collar Full" and "Nicotine." I also kind of love "Happy" by Pharrell. The songs I can't stand tend to be whatever the newest Katy Perry song is on the radio.
Your worst habit? I've always made weird faces while playing my instrument. I'm almost never caught with a normal look on my face.
Last movie you liked/disliked? Well, I'm a huge marshmallow, so I went to go see the "Veronica Mars" movie the day it came out. LOVED IT. And as much of a nerd as I am, I wasn't terribly impressed by the new "Hobbit" movies.
TV shows you can't get enough of? I'm really excited for "Game of Thrones" to be back. I was so anxious about the show ending last season that I started reading the books, which I'm almost caught up with now. I keep up with "Supernatural." I love "Suburgatory." I also watch "RuPaul's Drag Race" every week.
Favorite and least favorite fashion statement? I love high-low shirts and skirts. I think they always look interesting, and honestly, I love not having to worry about my underwear poking out the back of my jeans when I'm wearing a high-low top. Least favorite: I never understood the neon trend.
Favorite place to get a drink in Baltimore? Max's in Fells Point. They carry my favorite cider (Crispin), and you pretty much can't go wrong with a place that serves crabby pretzels and fried pickles.
Best advice you ever got? My high school orchestra director said this to everyone who wasn't sure about auditioning for something. He told us to always try for something — even if you're afraid you won't get it. Because the worst possible thing that could happen is you don't get the thing you tried for, and you don't even have a chance at getting it if you don't try.
